Ontario’s Ottawa On January 26, 2026, the federal government unveiled the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, which aims to reduce the burden of groceries and necessities for households with low and moderate incomes while simultaneously addressing supply chain expenses and food insecurity.
The Prime Minister’s Office describes the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit as the program that was previously provided as the GST credit, with a one-time top-up in 2026 and a five-year increase beginning in July 2026.
