A refugee teenager has been the first to come to Australia under a new humanitarian education program which will grant displaced pupils an opportunity to study, settle, and establish their lives safely.

At 24, he recalls the moment his airplane touched down in Melbourne as the end of a long “pause” on his life. For years, he told us, his future had been in limbo — between losing his native country and the legal limitations of living as a refugee overseas.

“I couldn’t exactly continue living my life,” he explained soon after he arrived. “Everything was paused. But I know now that I have a chance. If I work on it, I will see the fruits of my labor.”

He is one of 20 students chosen for a pilot program called the Refugee Student Settlement Pathway (RSSP) — a program that has the potential to change the way Australia resettles young refugees who possess academic talent.
