According to a recent report, Australia should set immigration goals to create a “stable temporary population” in order to handle the growing number of non-permanent residents that have put a strain on the nation’s housing and public services.
Over the previous 15 years, the percentage of temporary migrants in the population has more than doubled, from 2.7% in 2010 to over 6%.
The director of the Australian National University’s migration hub, Alan Gamlen, and emeritus professor Peter McDonald contend in a recent paper that our focus on net overseas migration statistics has diverted attention from a deeper conversation about the “scale of temporariness.”
