The end of Schengen’: Germany’s new border controls put EU unity at risk

Germany's plan to strengthen controls at all of its land borders appears to be primarily political in nature, is hard to defend legally, undermines Europe's highly valued free movement of people, and may put the EU's unity to the test.

Berlin announced on Monday that controls, which have been in place at its borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, and other countries since last year, would be expanded to include France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Denmark the following week.
