30,000 Invitations to be issued over next two weeks!

Last year Canada gave a chance to its citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents/grandparents through the temporary PGP program by allowing them to submit an interest form to sponsor. This form was made available to the applicants from October to November of 2020. As many as 100,000 applications were submitted in IRCC’s portal within minutes of the release. Considering the large number of applications, IRCC held its first draw of PGP in January 2021 wherein they invited 10,000 people to sponsor their loved ones.

Who can Sponsor?

• Canadian Citizen/Permanent Resident living in Canada/Registered Indians
• Minimum age of 18 years
• Meet minimum income requirements

Who can be sponsored?

• Parent/Grandparent related by blood
• Parent/Grandparent related by adoption
• Dependents

WHAT TO EXPECT IN THIS YEAR’S DRAW?

This year IRCC will select 30,000 people out of the same pool and issue them invitations to apply. Over the next two weeks till October 7, IRCC will start issuing invitations for the Parent/Grandparent Program. You’ll also have a chance to sponsor your spouse or partner’s parents/grandparents by becoming a co-signer in the application.

Keep in mind that residents of Quebec are required to demonstrate they meet the province’s sponsorship income requirements over the past 12 months. IRCC and Quebec both demand that sponsors sign an undertaking agreement. Sponsors are legally obliged to repay any social assistance claimed by their parents or grandparents during the undertaking period. The period is 20 years for non-Quebec residents and 10 years for residents of Quebec.

Upon receiving the invitation, you will be granted 60 days to submit all supporting documents and complete the sponsorship application.

IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY TO SPONSOR YOUR LOVED ONES?

In case you do not receive an invitation in this draw, you still have other ways to sponsor your parents/grandparents to Canada through Super Visa. This category allows parents and grandparents of Canadian permanent residents/Registered Indians/Canadian Citizens to stay in Canada for 2 years at a stretch and to enter Canada multiple times under these circumstances for up to 10 years.
