Across Canada, there are currently four temporary Employment Insurance policies in place to assist Canadian employees who have been impacted by economic upheaval and American levies.
These steps alter how rapidly employees can begin getting EI, how severance and other separation payments interact with benefits, how many weeks of benefits certain long-tenured workers can collect, and how companies can utilize an enlarged Work-Sharing program to avoid layoffs entirely.
Not all four precautions began at the same time, nor do they all have the same expiration date.
The waiting-period waiver and separation-earnings measure have been in effect since March 30, 2025, and the long-tenured-worker measure applies to qualifying claims beginning June 15, 2025.
