Structure of the IELTS Exam

The exam is based on four modules, each one aiming to test your language abilities along with comprehension and reciprocation.

  1. Reading Section

The Reading section consists of 40 questions and three long passages designed to test a wide range of reading skills like reading the main points, skimming, identifying logical arguments, and recognizing the writer's opinions, attitudes, and intentions.

  1. Listening Section

This module includes four parts with ten questions each. The queries are specifically designed for the answers to appear in the order they are heard in the audio recording. The audio includes a speech about local facilities, two university students in discussion, perhaps guided by a tutor, a conversation about travel arrangements

  1. Speaking Section

This section deals with 3 parts where different sets of questions are asked by the examiners on varied topics. The test usually takes between 11 to 14 minutes to complete and the examiners use detailed assessment criteria to mark the candidates.

  1. Writing Section

One of the most challenging modules in the IELTS exam is the writing section which demands attention to detail and grammatical accuracy. The module is divided into two parts and the candidate is required to write a letter and an essay for the test.
